The book has finally appeared and should be in a bookshop near you any time now. I hope you like it; if you can’t afford to buy it please ask your local library for it. The reference data at the back of the book mean that you may find it useful as a resource about native trees and their biology.

Aspen is one of our most beautiful and neglected trees. For anyone interested there is an excellent review of current knowledge about the tree, written by Neil Mackenzie and recently published by Scottish Native Woods (www.scottishnativewoods.org.uk) . It’s called ‘Ecology, conservation and management of Aspen’. I strongly recommend it!

I can see that 2011 is going to be a year of campaigning; so many things are under threat it difficult to keep everything in perspective. One campaign you should join is Save our Forests which you can find on www.38degrees.org.uk . Sorry this isn’t a live link as I haven’t discovered how to set that up yet! Also there are various campaigns to save the arts – we’re participating as you can see from the top right-hand corner.

New book on Trees in the Chilterns

While on the subject of books, there is another excellent book recently published called “Special Trees and Woods of the Chilterns” (£16.99), compiled and edited by Rachel Sanderson, the inspirational leader of the Chilterns Special Woods Project. This is a fascinating account of the trees and their history in the Chilterns AONB, illustrated with a profusion of excellent contemporary photographs, as well as a lot of historic ones, documents, and other memorabilia. The Chilterns was the centre of the Windsor chair industry, and even today there is a much greater area of ancient woodland (as well as plantation forestry etc.) than in most parts of England. If you want to enjoy trees and woods, their meaning and history all within easy reach of London I strongly recommend this book. To purchase check

New book on coppicing

I just came across an excellent new, beautifully illustrated book about coppicing:
“Coppicing and Coppice Crafts” by Oaks, R and Mills, E. published by the Crowwood Press at £19.95. This is one of the best new books about trees I have seen for a long time and would make a brilliant Christmas present!

Great news! we have secured a new publisher for the new Tree Book: the Natural History Museum. The publication date is yet to be finalised but it will be in 2011. The title will be ‘Trees of Britain and Ireland: history, ecology, poducts and folklore’

Meanwhile, the video series ‘Spirit of Trees’ is now available on DVD. Last year the plan was to release the DVD version to coincide with the book, but since the book is not now to be published by Anova Books for the National Trust, the DVD has been released ahead of the new book. Please check on the website to purchase the DVD.

Vietnam After the Fire: latest news
The DVD is being properly authored with four chapter headings for parts 1 to 4. There will also be two reviews of the film from when it was first shown in 1988, together with Director’s notes – which I wrote during the production of the film. You’ll see here when the new version is available.
